Driving in New Zealand

Visitors to New Zealand often agree that driving here is a remarkably stress–free experience! Most places aren't too crowded, the roads are in good condition and renting a reliable car doesn't cost the earth.

Here are a few things to remember as you embark on your Kiwi road tour:

  • Always drive on the left hand side of the road!
  • All occupants of a car must wear seatbelts.
  • Town and city speed limits are 50kph in most cases.
  • Country and motorway speed limits are 100kph.
  • Kiwis' driving habits may be different from your own.
  • Be courteous and patient, especially when changing lanes.
